Wayne Pennington, an earthquake researcher and dean of the College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University, spent time in Nepal a few years ago, studying the problems that could be anticipated in the event of a large earthquake.

Dr. Pennington also was attached to USAID when the Haiti earthquake occurred.

He has the unique perspective of a geophysicist who had to explain the science to the humanitarian and diplomatic community, while explaining how the humanitarian side works to the scientific community.

He has spent years studying earthquakes and says he has been "up close and personal with lots of earthquakes" as large as 7.7 on the Richter scale.
