ALEXANDRIA, Va. (May 7, 2015) – The American Medical Group Foundation’s (AMGF) Measure Up/Pressure Down® national high blood pressure campaign will host the Roll Up Your Sleeves! Health Expo Saturday, May 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C. The free event will feature health and fitness celebrities, fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, blood pressure screenings, door prizes, giveaways and more.

The Health Expo, open to the public, will be held at YMCA Anthony Bowen, 1325 W Street NW in Washington, D.C.

Celebrities on hand to share their own health and fitness tips include Cornell McClellan, personal trainer to the First Family; Chef LaLa, internationally known chef and nutritionist; and Bruce Johnson, local news anchor. Eleven fitness and yoga classes and four healthy-cooking demonstrations will be featured throughout the event, along with blood pressure screenings, health education booths and more.

“This community event will inspire and empower people to get in control of their health through physical activity, healthy cooking, and awareness of high blood pressure and its risks,” said Jerry Penso, M.D., MBA, president of the AMGF. “We encourage all community members to roll up their sleeves for better health by joining us on May 9 at YMCA Anthony Bowen.”

The event is made possible through a grant from United Health Foundation and additional funding through the District of Columbia Department of Health.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the American Medical Group Foundation’s Measure Up/Pressure Down® campaign to help raise awareness about the perils of high blood pressure, and improve people’s health and wellness,” said Christopher J. Mullins, president and CEO, UnitedHealthcare of the Mid-Atlantic, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company.

YMCA Anthony Bowen, an event partner, is of particular importance to the D.C. community in its history as the first YMCA to serve African-Americans in the world. Inspired by his friend William Chauncey Langdon, founder of the YMCA of the City of Washington, Anthony Bowen was committed to the advancement of African-Americans in social, educational and religious respects. Over 160 years later, it helps a diverse community of children, families, young professionals and seniors stay active – mentally and physically.

“High blood pressure disproportionately affects minorities – including African Americans,” said Lisa Horton, Association Director of Healthy Living for the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington. “Healthy living is one of the Y’s three focuses – along with youth development and social responsibility – and this health expo will certainly help our community find new ways to improve their health.”

Exhibitors will include American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, American Kidney Fund, American Society of Hypertension, DC Fire & EMS, DC Health Link, District of Columbia Department of Health, HealthyWomen, Inova Medical Group, Measure Up/Pressure Down®, MedStar Family Choice, Men’s Health Network, Million Hearts®, WomenHeart, and YMCA of Metropolitan Washington.
