Ed Baptist, professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University and author of the recent book, “The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism,” says the result of the “Women on 20s” poll to put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill reflects how Americans want to see themselves.

Baptist says:

“The face on the $20 bill says something about how we want to perceive ourselves as a nation. We want to see ourselves as brave, and both Jackson and Tubman were courageous. The difference is that Tubman used her bravery to free herself and others from slavery. Jackson used his to steal land from native Americans, extend slavery, and shoot political rivals in bar fights.”
