WHO: Nathaniel Herr, assistant professor of psychology, conducts research in the areas of emotion regulation and interpersonal functioning. Dr. Herr received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and received postdoctoral training and a faculty appointment at Duke University Medical Center. He is the director of AU’s Interpersonal Emotion Lab.
Herr says of the film: “’Inside Out’ attains a rare balance: it is both highly entertaining and largely adherent to modern emotion science. Pixar has breathed stunning conceptual and visual life into academic concepts of how our minds work. The filmmakers have created a beautiful and accessible depiction of the interplay between emotions, memories, and interpersonal interactions. With its exploration of the value of experiencing and accepting the full range of emotions (even difficult ones like sadness), “Inside Out” is a movie that will likely have a positive impact on both kids and adults alike.”
