Rush University Medical Center’s leadership announced today that Rush will acquire part of the current location of Malcolm X College on Chicago's West Side. Rush will occupy seven of the site’s 11 acres after the college moves next year to its new location directly across the street. Part of Rush's campus borders the college's current location.

While Rush has not determined specific plans for use of the site yet, it expects to focus on addressing the current and future needs of Rush University. Enrollment in the University’s four colleges has doubled over the last 10 years, reaching nearly 2,500 students.

“Since the University opened nearly 45 years ago, the way students are educated has changed dramatically. We need to invest in facilities and technology to support new models of education, while considering the experiential needs of current and future students and faculty,” said Dr. Larry Goodman, Rush CEO and president of Rush University.

“We worked hard planning and building our new state-of-the-art hospital, which opened three years ago, to ensure we would provide an exceptional experience for our patients,” Goodman continued. “Now we will be equally diligent in planning to ensure that our students and faculty have an exceptional environment and campus experience, and even more innovative partnerships with community organizations and institutions.”

This new site also will allow for enhanced collaboration with Malcom X College. The close proximity to the college will enable both organizations to strengthen their four year partnership.

“We deeply value Malcolm X College as an academic and community partner that has been working jointly with Rush to help educate the next generation of health care professionals,” said Goodman. “We will continue to build on our strong partnership to advance educational and economic opportunities for Chicagoans.”

The remaining four acres of the site will be the future home of the Chicago Blackhawks’ community training center and practice facility. “Rush shares the same aspirations with its neighbors on the site, the Chicago Blackhawks,” said Goodman. “We both are committed to the growth and revitalization of the West Side, and together we see opportunities to provide health, wellness and educational activities for young people from throughout Chicago.”

An important economic anchor in the community, Rush has created nearly 1,200 new jobs in the last 10 years. Rush  has been updating its ten-year campus master plan over the past several months to ensure it has the facilities and environment to meet its strategic goals in the future.
