Newswise — Julianna Czum, MD, is the first recipient of the American College of Radiology (ACR) Bruce J. Hillman Fellowship in Scholarly Publishing. Czum, director of cardiothoracic imaging at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, began a concentrated medical editing, journalism and publishing experience Sept. 8.

“This innovative publishing fellowship encourages junior and mid-career radiologists to pursue medical journalism, improve related skills and help advance the field of radiology,” said Bruce J. Hillman, MD, FACR, founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR). “I look forward to working with Dr. Czum and future fellows to encourage careers in radiology journalism through vital hands-on experience,” he added.

Czum is assistant professor of radiology and cardiology at the Geisel School of Medicine, in Hanover, NH. Her areas of focus include noninvasive cardiac and vascular imaging (CT and MR) and thoracic imaging. During the two-week, on-site portion of the fellowship, Czum spent one-on-one time with Hillman; Ruth Carlos, MD, JACR deputy editor; journal staff members; and representatives of Elsevier, the publisher of the JACR. She will continue her fellowship as a member of the JACR editorial board, developing a blog for the journal, which is due to begin this week. Czum can be followed via Twitter (@JuliannaCzumMD).

JACR, which increased its Thomson Reuters impact factor by 24 percent during 2013–14, is the College’s monthly peer-reviewed journal that focuses on issues relating to health services research and policy, practice management, education and training and leadership. In the past eight months, nearly 900 million individuals viewed 275 JACR articles. Learn more about the Bruce J. Hillman Fellowship in Scholarly Publishing.
