Newswise — Providers who care for patients with possible head injuries or who have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI) can attend a free webinar on Oct. 21 to learn to:

● Identify appropriate, evidence-based imaging exams for patients presenting with TBI● Explain to patients the medical reasoning behind the selection of the most appropriate procedure● Describe (at the highest level) the most promising directions for TBI imaging research

A wide range of imaging modalities and techniques serves an essential role in identifying intracranial injury in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) including:

● Detecting injuries that may require immediate surgical or procedural intervention● Detecting injuries that may benefit from early medical therapy or vigilant neurologic supervision

There has been a lack of resources to summarize the latest evidence-based TBI research and help TBI professionals select the most appropriate imaging exam for a given case. To address this, the American College of Radiology (ACR) Head Injury Institute (HII) convened a committee of leading neuroradiologists, neuropsychologists and other experts to review evidence on the utility of various imaging techniques in patients presenting with TBI to provide guidance for evidence-based, clinical imaging protocols.

This free webinar is based on the results of this effort, which culminated with papers published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR) and American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR). Attendees will have the opportunity to earn CME credit. The webinar is appropriate for a wide variety of TBI stakeholders, including:

● Emergency medicine physicians● Neuropsychologists● Physiatrists and other rehabilitation professionals● Neurologists● Radiologists● Neurosurgeons● TBI case workers● Patients and their caregivers● Other referring physicians including primary care doctors and pediatricians● Nurses involved with TBI care● Trainees (residents, fellows and students)

About ACR and HII:

The mission of the ACR Head Injury Institute (HII) (headinjuryinstitute.org) is to advance the treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) through the application of diagnostic imaging.

The HII operates as an institution within the ACR (acr.org). The ACR, founded in 1924, is a professional medical society dedicated to serving patients and society by empowering radiology professionals to advance the practice, science and professions of radiological care.
