Newswise — (CHICAGO) – Rush University Medical Center has been ranked second among 102 leading academic medical centers in the U.S. in a study conducted by the UHC (University HealthSystem Consortium).

Rush is one of 13 academic medical centers in the U.S., and the only one in Illinois, to receive the Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Award, formerly named the UHC Quality Leadership Award.

The 2015 study evaluated 102 of the UHC’s principal member hospitals on the basis of mortality, effectiveness, safety, patient centeredness and equity of care. Rush ranked second among the 13 hospitals that received a five-star rating.

The award is given to UHC member academic medical centers that have demonstrated superior performance as measured by the UHC Quality and Accountability Study. The award winners were announced Oct. 1 at the UHC Annual Conference 2015 in Orlando, Fla.

This year marks the seventh time the UHC began the Quality and Accountability Study in 2005 that Rush has been ranked in the study’s top five (and the eight time in the top 10). Rush ranked fifth in last year’s study.

As it has every year that the study has been conducted, Rush attained a perfect score in the equity of care category, which means that the results of Rush patients’ care do not vary due to differences in patients’ gender, race or socioeconomic status.

“Patients look to academic medical centers to provide advanced, innovative care, so it is an especially great honor that Rush has ranked second among all academic medical centers in the U.S. that were included in this year’s study,” said Larry J. Goodman, MD, Rush CEO. “Our performance on the UHC study reflects the skill, dedication and collaboration of everyone at Rush.”

Rankings based entirely on patient outcomes data

Unlike other reviews of hospitals that take reputation into account or that are limited to data about patients with Medicare or Medicaid, the UHC study is based entirely on objective data related to patient outcomes for all patients regardless of insurance.

The analysis used performance data from a variety of sources, including the UHC Clinical Data Base/Resource Manager™ and the UHC Core Measures Data Base; the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey; and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network.
