Newswise — WASHINGTON, DC (October 5, 2015)—Milken Institute School of Public Health (Milken Institute SPH) at the George Washington University (GW) will hold an event on October 9 to screen segments of Girl Rising, a feature film that tells the story of nine girls and the importance of education especially as it relates to their future wellbeing. Girl Rising ambassador and Hollywood star Freida Pinto will speak at the event and will participate in a discussion of the issue, including some of the barriers that make it hard for girls to attend or finish school.
An estimated 62 million girls across the globe fail to reach their full potential because they are denied the right to an education. The film and the Girl Rising campaign aim to address that problem in countries around the world. Join us on October 9 for this special screening, a chance to meet Pinto and to celebrate the upcoming International Day of the Girl. Lynn R. Goldman, MD, the Michael and Lori Milken Dean of Milken Institute SPH, will give welcoming remarks and have a conversation with Pinto about the film, the issue, and the way that a lack of education can affect health and future wellbeing. Audience members can ask questions and talk about the issue in a Q and A that follows the screening.
The United Nations has declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl and the GW event on October 9 is part of the Washington celebration around it. On October 10, Girl Rising and the Global India Fund are holding a benefit gala at the National Building Museum in DC.
Milken Institute SPH is holding the October 9 event along with Girl Up and GW’s Global Women’s Institute. Mary Ellsberg, director of the GW’s Global Women’s Institute and a national expert on issues affecting women and girls around the world, will attend the event and participate in the discussion as will Amita Vyas, PhD, an associate professor of prevention and community health at Milken Institute SPH. Vyas served as a producer of the Hindi version of the Girl Rising feature film, which was released in India recently.
