At the 2015 Society for Risk Analysis Annual Meeting this December in Arlington, Virginia, Dr. Arvind Thiruvengadam will tell his fascinating story about how his research unleashed one of the biggest corporate liabilities ever. Join him and other speakers for the plenary session on “Risk Analysis, Enterprise Innovation, and the Corporate Scientist.” Dr. Thiruvengadam will be joined by Nicky Cariglia of the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Limited and Steven Lewis, formerly of ExxonMobil, serving as moderator.
A plenary session on "Global Migration Challenges, Risk, and Resilience," to be held Tuesday, December 8, from 8:30-10:00 am, will feature keynote speakers Kathleen Newland, Co-Founder and Senior Fellow, Migration Policy Institute, and Jana Mason, Senior Advisor, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. “There is no more urgent topic for risk and resilience analysis professionals, and our Society, than the refugee and migration crises around the world,” says SRA President-Elect James H. Lambert. “It has implications for health and welfare, environment, economy, infrastructure, communication, policy, law, and each other of the specialty groups. This topic manifests critically and in nuanced ways for each of the Society's regional organizations.”
“Dr. Thiruvengadam’s experience has implications for every SRA member whose scholarship and science can influence policy and regulation,” says President-Elect Lambert. The 2015 meeting, “Empires of Risk Analysis: Science, Policy, and Innovation,” follows the successful SRA Fourth World Congress on Risk held in Singapore this past July. “Empires” reflects on 200 years since Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, 150 years since the end of the US. Civil War, and 50 years since Singapore’s independence. Members from Europe, UK, China, Australia/New Zealand, Egypt, Taiwan, Korea, Russia, Ukraine, Latin America, US/Canada, and soon others are represented in the worldwide organization of SRA.
Close to 900 scientists, scholars, government and non-government officials, military, and others will come together at the Crystal Gateway Marriott to hear about and discuss critical risk concerns for populations of the developed and developing world. Whether the issue is environment, health, climate, nanotechnology, food safety, terrorism, economics, security, emergency response, communication, infrastructure, policy/regulation, or any of the many aspects of risk and resilience, the SRA Annual Meeting is where thought leaders will present and discuss their work.
