Newswise — SEATTLE – (Dec. 2, 2015) – For the 10th consecutive year, The Leapfrog Group today named Virginia Mason Medical Center one of the Top Hospitals in the United States.

“The 2015 Top Hospital award affirms our team members’ extraordinary focus on and commitment to quality and safety, and to creating a perfect patient experience,” said Virginia Mason Chairman and CEO Gary S. Kaplan, MD.

Virginia Mason is the only hospital in Washington state to receive the 2015 Top Hospital award. Also, it is the only hospital in the nation named a Top Hospital every year since the recognition program began in 2006.

“This year, more than 1,600 hospitals voluntarily reported their safety and quality information to The Leapfrog Group,” Dr. Kaplan said. “I am very proud we are among the elite six percent to earn the Top Hospital designation.”

Virginia Mason is among 98 urban, rural and children’s hospitals across the nation to receive the 2015 Top Hospital award. The selection is based on results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures performance on patient safety and quality and focuses on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use, and management structures established to prevent errors. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing qualifications for the award, including survival rates for high-risk procedures and the hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors. “Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “Top Hospitals have lower infection rates, better outcomes, decreased length of stay and fewer readmissions.

“By achieving Top Hospital status, Virginia Mason has proven it prioritizes the safety of its patients, is committed to transparency, and provides exemplary care for families and patients,” she added.

Founded in 2000 by large employers and other health care purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national non-profit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care. Members of the Washington, D.C.-based coalition include The Boeing Co., AARP, Federal Express, United Parcel Service, Verizon and many others.
