Newswise — As China detains a Swedish human rights worker, Lionel Jensen, associate professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Notre Dame, says…

"This is as astonishing as it is desperate. However, this action is just the most recent in an extra-legal or illegal pattern of apprehending civil rights lawyers whose success in laboring in the courts against the government's routine, flippant violation of law must be met with incarceration. These are dark days in China to be sure and those like Peter Dahlin and his fellow civil rights attorneys like Pu Zhiqiang and Wang Yu, who seek to illuminate the shadowed halls of injustice by means of Chinese constitutional guarantees threaten the status quo of a desperately outraged Party-state bent on self-preservation at all costs."

Jensen specializes in the history of Chinese religion and thought and Chinese nationalism.
