Newswise — It is estimated that half of all Americans take a health supplement every day, from fish oil to multivitamins. The $30 billion vitamin and supplement industry says these products can make consumers healthier.

“There is irrational enthusiasm on the part of many people to use herbal remedies and dietary supplements,” says Herbert Bonkovsky, M.D., professor of gastroenterology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. “In fact, these products are not well-tested or shown to be safe and effective all the time.”Bonkovsky is one of the medical experts featured in “Supplements and Safety,” a “Frontline” documentary examining how vitamins and supplements are labeled, marketed and regulated and whether they’re actually beneficial.

“Supplements and Safety” premieres tonight (Tuesday, Jan. 19) at 10 p.m. EST on PBS and pbs.org. The documentary is a co-production of “Frontline” and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in collaboration with the New York Times.
