Newswise — Chicago (March 29, 2016): The Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) awarded Ginah Nightingale, PharmD BCOP, the 2016 Oncology Pharmacy Practice Literature Award at the 12th HOPA Annual Conference on March 17 in Atlanta. This prestigious award recognizes an article, other than scientific research, that contributes to the betterment of the hematology/oncology pharmacy profession, and describes innovations in community, hospital, or healthcare system in hematology/oncology pharmacy practices. Dr. Nightingale received this award for her work, Evaluation of a Pharmacist-led Medication Assessment Used to Identify Prevalence of and Associations with Polypharmacy and Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use Among Ambulatory Senior Adults with Cancer, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in May 2015.
Dr. Nightingale is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Jefferson College of Pharmacy at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her clinical practice sites include the inpatient Medical Oncology unit at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the ambulatory Senior Adult Oncology Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Kimmel Cancer Center where she provides medication therapy management services, medication adherence counseling and medication education.
In her nomination, fellow HOPA member Besty Paul states, “Dr. Nightingale’s work exemplifies the use of clinical pharmacists in improving the quality of patient care in the field of geriatric oncology. Her practice based research initiative has contributed to the growing evidence of pharmacists as valuable healthcare providers for senior adult oncology patients.”
Dr. Nightingale’s research interests include senior adult oncology, specifically, medication related problems including polypharmacy, potentially inappropriate medication use, adverse drug events and medication adherence in senor adults living with cancer.
She received her doctor of pharmacy degree from Rutgers University, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy after which she completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Temple University Health System in Philadelphia and then completed a second year Oncology Pharmacy Practice Residency at University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore. She is a board certified oncology pharmacotherapy specialist.
HOPA
HOPA is a nonprofit professional organization formed in 2004 to help oncology and hematology pharmacy practitioners and their associates provide the best possible cancer care. HOPA supports research, conducts educational conferences to advance knowledge, encourages professional development and advocates for health policy issues that improve patient care. HOPA has more than 2,500 members and includes oncology pharmacists, as well as pharmacy administrators, researchers, residents, interns and technicians specializing in hematology/oncology practice.
