Newswise — Cybersecurity affects us all. In the U.S. alone, we lose $100 billion annually to cybercrime, and an estimated 556 million people fall victim to cybercrimes every year. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory is working to train the next generation of cyber defenders who can protect us against malicious cyber attacks. Please join us for our inaugural Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition where teams of college students compete to design and defend a mock utility system (power plant) from attack.

Cyberattacks are on the increaseAccording to the U.S. Department of Energy the international energy cybersecurity environment has experienced an increase in cyberattacks. The sophistication and effectiveness of this new generation of attacks marks a significant change in the level of threats to the energy sector and the U.S. economy. Evidence is mounting that nation-states are increasing cyber-spying and attacks on U.S. utilities and equipment suppliers.
WHAT: Defending tomorrow’s infrastructure today! Students from seven regional colleges will create simulated power utility networks and then defend them from cyber-attack by experienced network security experts from Argonne’s Global Security Systems Division. These student teams will use innovative thinking and new ideas to fend off “hackers” to keep the lights on while guaranteeing the security of data.
