Newswise — SEATTLE – (April 25, 2016) – Virginia Mason Medical Center has received another “A” for patient safety in the national Hospital Safety Score program administered by The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit hospital safety watchdog.

The safety grades, announced today, are updated by Leapfrog twice a year, and Virginia Mason has received an “A” all nine times since the program began in 2012. Virginia Mason is the only Seattle hospital to accomplish this.

“We are proud of this recognition by The Leapfrog Group,” said Virginia Mason Chairman and CEO Gary S. Kaplan, MD. “Maintaining our ‘A’ Hospital Safety Score on an ongoing basis requires a focus on patient safety from every one of our team members to ensure every patient receives the safest, highest quality care possible.”

An “A” signifies Virginia Mason is among the safest hospitals in the region and nation. Leapfrog assigns grades of A, B, C, D or F to more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice a year based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. Scores are calculated by patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
