Newswise — Washington, DC (April 28, 2016) – The American Society of Nephrology (ASN) has named Rajnish Mehrotra, MD, FASN, as Editor-in-Chief of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), effective January 1, 2017. He will serve a six-year term.

“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to serve as Editor-in-Chief of the nation’s leading clinical nephrology research journal, said Mehrotra, who is Section Head of Nephrology at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington and an investigator at the Kidney Research Institute. “As Editor-in-Chief, I will build on the work done by Bill Bennett and Gary Curhan for CJASN to become an increasingly influential voice in shaping the entire scope of the clinical practice of nephrology. I hope to accomplish this by preserving the core mission of communicating the most important advances in clinical research, including innovations in research methods and care delivery, putting these advances in context for future research directions and patient care, and becoming an important voice influencing innovation, research funding and prioritization, and public policy, including delineating the value nephrologists provide in promoting population health.”

Dr. Mehrotra’s own research, which has focused on topics including the comparative effectiveness of dialysis therapies, patient-reported outcomes, and ethnic disparities in chronic kidney disease, has at times been published in the journal he will soon lead.

Dr. Mehrotra is also an active member of ASN and has previously served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN) and the Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP) in addition to having served as Chairman of the Dialysis Advisory Group. He also is a member of the ASN Public Policy Board, Grants Committee, and the Quality Metrics Task Force.

“We look forward to having Dr. Mehrotra on board,” said Raymond C. Harris, MD, FASN, President of ASN. “He brings to the journal a wide range of experience in nephrology practice and research. I’m sure the team he puts together will include a diverse range of perspectives that will promote the highest quality research to inform those working in the field of nephrology. “His passion and enthusiasm in this field are sure to benefit the journal and all of us here at ASN.”

Dr. Mehrotra succeeds Gary C. Curhan, MD, ScD, FASN, whose six-year term ends on December 31, 2016.
