WHO: Dr. Christopher Giza directs the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program and is a professor of pediatrics and neurosurgery at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine and Mattel Children’s Hospital.

EXPERTISE:Research and clinical care of concussions and traumatic brain injury in children and adults, including athletes.

QUOTE: “In the hours and days after a concussion, the injured brain undergoes a cascade of changes that can lead to physical symptoms and a decline in cognitive function. This damage rarely shows on conventional brain scans like CT or MRI. That’s why we need to better understand the nature of concussions and how best to treat them.”

RESEARCH: Giza leads a UCLA team participating in a landmark three-year, $30 million study funded by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Department of Defense. The study’s goal is to advance scientific understanding of concussion, define evidence-based guidelines for clinical treatment, and provide informed guidance to coaches, trainers, parents and athletes.
