Newswise — University of the Sciences will celebrate the class of 2016 at its 195th Commencement Ceremony on Wednesday May 25, 2016. The University is honored to bestow an honorary doctor of science degree on board chairman Marvin Samson HomAlm’96, who will be counted among the approximately 550 graduates that day.
In addition, USciences welcomes keynote speaker and founding dean of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Paul Katz, MD, to the 5th Bachelor’s Degree Conferment Ceremony on Friday, May 20, 2016. Some 250 students in the doctor of occupational therapy, doctor of physical therapy, masters of physician assistant studies, and doctor of pharmacy programs who entered the University as a first-year student in 2012, or who transferred into those programs before earning a bachelor’s degree, are eligible to receive a bachelor’s degree as they continue their matriculation toward their professional degree.
Marvin Samson is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Samson Medical Technologies, L.L.C., a company specializing in injectable drug delivery systems and programs for hospital and alternate site pharmacists. A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Samson received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Temple University, working full time to finance his education. In 1967, Mr. Samson helped to found Elkins-Sinn, Inc., today, West-Ward Pharmaceuticals, and for 18 years was its President and Chief Executive Officer. Following his tenure at Elkins-Sinn, Mr. Samson founded and was President and Chief Executive Officer of Marsam Pharmaceuticals Inc. before establishing Samson Medical Technologies in 1998. Mr. Samson holds five (5) U.S. patents pertaining to pharmaceutical manufacturing. He is active on numerous charitable and industry boards. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and was its Interim President for the 2015 and 2011-12 academic years. A recipient of various awards for business leadership, Mr. Samson continues to serve the community through charitable support of educational institutions, hospitals, healthcare research and development, and children’s programs. He was recently inducted into the Central High School Alumni Hall of Fame and received the very first Virtua Foundation Humanitarian Award.
Paul Katz, MD, became the founding dean of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) in July 2010. Located in Camden, N.J., CMSRU is the first new MD-granting medical school in New Jersey in over 40 years and arose from a partnership between the Cooper Health System and Rowan University. Focused on innovation, graduating physicians who will care for underserved populations, and the development of physician leaders, CMSRU’s charter class will graduate on May 9, 2016. Dr. Katz came to CMSRU after serving as founding vice dean for faculty and clinical affairs and professor of medicine at The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, PA, from 2007 to 2010 where he helped launch that new medical school which enrolled its first class in 2009. Between 2001 and 2007, Dr. Katz was recruited to Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC) in Miami Beach where he was senior vice president and chief medical officer and also held the rank of professor of medicine at the University of Miami. As the senior physician leader at MSMC, he had both operational and fiscal responsibility for research, undergraduate and graduate education programs, and medical affairs in addition to leading strategic initiatives focused on business growth opportunities, targeted physician recruitment, and new program development. Other stops in his distinguished career include the National Institutes of Health, University of Florida, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Georgetown University Hospital, and Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Katz is a 1973 graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his training in internal medicine at the Shands Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville in 1976.
