Newswise — Glenn C. Altschuler is the Dean of the Cornell School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, Professor of American Studies, and the co-author of Rude Republic: Americans and Their Politics in the 19th Century. He believes that House Speaker Paul Ryan will fall in line behind Trump, but may anticipate, or even hope for, a Trump defeat.

Altschuler says:

“It has often been said that ‘while the Democrats fall in love, the Republicans fall in line.’ And that is likely to happen with Paul Ryan.“I expect both to emerge from the meeting and make positive comments, though Ryan’s may well fall short of an endorsement.

“Trump needs the Republican establishment for several reasons, the most important of which is that he has no ‘ground game’, and needs to have elected officials – especially governors and state leaders – to lend their ‘apparatus’ to him for a get-out-the-vote effort.

“Most of them will come along, albeit reluctantly, and make an endorsement. But their support may not be active – and they may concentrate their efforts on down-ballot candidates.

“I’d watch their feet more than their mouths. Some – perhaps including Ryan– may anticipate and even hope for a Trump defeat in the fall so that the party can regroup, along the ideological lines they prefer.”
