Newswise — WASHINGTON— In an effort to address the growing opioid epidemic in the United States, nationally recognized experts will discuss research-based strategies for preventing, intervening, and maintaining abstinence from opiate addictions during a congressional briefing June 24.
The briefing, titled “Fighting the Opioid Epidemic on Multiple Fronts by Leveraging Empirical Evidence,” will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rayburn House Office Building Room 2226 in Washington, DC. The event is hosted in collaboration by RTI International, the National Prevention Science Coalition, and the American Orthopsychiatry Association.
Researchers will review the empirical support for a number of approaches that could be part of a comprehensive strategy for addressing this epidemic. The discussion will highlight the need for prevention strategies among youth, intervention strategies for current users identified through the criminal justice system, and approaches to encourage abstinence among those in communities with substance addictions.
The panel includes:
-Scott Novak, Ph.D., senior developmental epidemiologist at RTI International-Kenzie Preston, Ph.D., senior investigator at the Intramural Research Program in National Institute on Drug Abuse-Terrence Walton, chief operating officer at National Association of Drug Court Professionals
Legislative staff are encouraged to attend, as well as administrators, researchers, and interest groups seeking to advance the use of research-based approaches that demonstrably combat opioid addictions before, during and after they occur.
