Newswise — The 2016 Summer Olympics are Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro. Professors at the George Washington University are experts on all facets of the Olympic Games, including the challenges of large-scale sporting events and the health concerns related to the Zika epidemic in Brazil.

The Olympic Games
Lisa Delpy Neirotti, associate professor of sport management, is an expert on large-scale sporting events, including the Olympic Games, Super Bowl and World Cup. She can discuss the economics of the Olympics, including local tourism, stadium finance and merchandising. She will lead a student trip to the Olympic Games in Rio to study how the games are managed and how sponsors leverage large-scale sporting events.
Scott J. White, associate professor of cyber security, is the director of cybersecurity bachelor’s degree completion program at GW. Dr. White has taught courses on Olympic security and consulted with media for the London games. He can discuss all aspects of Olympic security.
Brazil
Cynthia McClintock, professor of political science and international affairs, is an expert on Latin American politics and U.S. policy toward the region. She can comment on the domestic political situation in Brazil and the United States’ relationship with the host nation.
Mark Langevin, director of the Brazil Initiative at GW, is an expert on the Brazilian government. He can discuss the agriculture, energy and environmental policymaking in Brazil as well as its political environment, history and relations with the U.S.
Salah Hassan, professor of marketing, is an expert on international branding. He specializes in country branding, especially for countries with negative public images. He can discuss the challenges Brazil faces as it becomes the focal point of the world’s attention this summer.
Sports Injuries
Raj Rao is a professor of orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He can discuss and analyze a variety of injuries facing Olympic athletes.
Mary J. Barron, assistant professor of exercise and nutrition sciences, can talk about what trainers, coaches and parents should do if an athlete suffers a head injury; how and when an athlete should return to the playing field after an injury; and the importance of a post-injury plan for gradually returning an athlete to play.
