Newswise — WASHINGTON, D.C., July 15, 2016 – The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) invites high school physics teachers from across the country to a meeting where they may find their next best classroom resource. The High School Physics Teachers’ Day is held to introduce teachers to the myriad resources specifically for high school physics teachers and students available through AAPT. Scheduled for July 18, this event offers participants a special discounted registration to facilitate their involvement.

The program for the day features a number of sessions designed for teaching physics to high school students including a roundtable discussion, how to adapt physics activities to address three major components of the Next Generation Science Standards and how students can conduct particle physics investigations.

Part of the day includes a special luncheon where teachers will be introduced to the varied resources that AAPT offers to support physics learning in high schools. For example, they'll be exposed to the AAPT’s ComPADRE digital library that contains free online resources, as well as AAPT’s eMentoring program and journals. They'll also get a glimpse of programs like Adopt-a-Physicist, High School Physics Teacher Grants and contests such as the Physics Olympiad, Physics Bowl and Photo Contest.

In addition to the primary program there are several Weekend Workshops that address physics teaching topics in greater detail and discuss classroom skills, techniques and activities such as Activity Based Physics in the Classroom, Science Safety Protocols for Lab, Classroom and Field, The Physics of Chemistry and Tools for Teaching Students to Synthesize Concepts. Participants can also attend the High School Physics Teacher’s Lounge which will feature new digital resources, topical discussions and interactive labs and lesson plans.

The full program of activities can be accessed at AAPT’s Summer Conference website on the AAPT High School Physics Teacher’s day page at http://aapt.org/Conferences/sm2016/hsphysteachday.cfm.
