Newswise — For the second consecutive year, Rush University Medical Center improved in U.S. News & World Report's rankings in the annual “Best Hospitals” issue, which became available today. U.S. News ranked Rush among the best hospitals in the country in nine specialty areas – two more than last year – and Rush improved in the rankings for eight of those specialties.
Rush’s orthopedics program was ranked fourth in the country, up from sixth last year, and remains the highest ranked orthopedics program in Illinois. The gynecology and ear, nose and throat programs also now are the highest ranked of these specialties in Illinois. The complete list of rankings is as follows:

Rush remains among a small group of hospitals that ranked highly in multiple specialties. Only 137 hospitals of the more than 5,600 hospitals in the United States — less than three percent — scored high enough for U.S. News to rank them nationally in even one specialty.

Rankings the latest in steady stream of honors for Rush
The U.S. News rankings come less than a week after Rush received a four-star rating for quality of care from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. CMS, as the centers are known, rated Rush University Medical Center more highly than any other academic medical center in the Chicago area.
These rankings are the latest in a steady stream of honors for Rush that is unique among U.S. hospitals, including the following recognitions.
•Rush received its fourth consecutive Magnet designation, the highest honor in nursing, in January.
•In October, the UHC (University HealthSystem Consortium) ranked Rush second among 102 academic medical centers nationwide in its annual Quality and Accountability survey.
•Rush has received nine consecutive "A" grades for safety from the Leapfrog Group, putting it among fewer than 100 hospitals in the country that have received the highest possible grade each time since Leapfrog began issuing the semi-annual ratings in 2012.
•Rush has been ranked among the country's top 100 hospitals — and 15 major teaching hospitals — three times by Truven Health Analytics, a leading provider of health care data and analytics.
•The Human Rights Campaign, a civil rights group that advocates for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LBGT) equality, has named Rush a Leader in LGBT Health Equality for eight consecutive years.
•Rush was one of four hospitals in the country that the American Hospital Association honored for equity of care in June of 2015.
