Newswise — (Baltimore, MD) – Mercy Medical Center has announced the opening of the new $27 million Crane Surgery Suite at Bunting, eight new operating rooms dedicated to orthopedic specialties, located on the 1st floor of Mercy’s Mary Catherine Bunting Center.

The new surgical suite is named in honor of The Charles Crane Family whose foundation donated $1.25 million to the center’s construction.

According to Susan Finlayson, DNP, RN, Senior Vice President of Operations for Mercy, the new ORs are especially equipped to handle total joint, spine and upper extremity surgeries as well as neurosurgeries. The operating rooms’ design is flexible enough, however, to accommodate any type of surgical specialty in the future.

“Mercy’s clinical staff provided input in the operating rooms’ design given the special workflow required in these various orthopedic procedures. The Crane operating suite will feature the latest technologies, from image routing and display, ergonomic, ceiling mounted booms, flat screens and LED lighting,” Finlayson said.

Each operating room averages 700 square feet. Finlayson noted that the room sizing serves to “comfortably manage equipment and the necessary technology needed in intensive cases for the patient’s benefit.”

“The new Crane Center affords closer proximity to the inpatient and critical units within the Bunting Center. This means a more streamlined process for both staff and patients,” said Judy Weiland, Mercy Senior Vice President of Strategic/Capital Planning & Facilities.

According to Sr. Helen Amos, RSM, Executive Chair, Mercy Board of Trustees, The Charles Crane Family Foundation is among Mercy’s most generous benefactors. The Crane Foundation donated $1 million to the construction of the Mary Catherine Bunting Center and has provided special grants for many years for the hospital’s Family Violence Response program.
