Newswise — DALLAS – September 2, 2016 – UT Southwestern Medical Center has been recognized by Becker's Hospital Review for its comprehensive cancer services and care, provided through the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Becker's Hospital Review included UT Southwestern in its 2016 list of 100 Hospitals and Health Systems With Great Oncology Programs, featuring hospitals and health systems leading the nation in cancer care. Hospitals included on the list offer patients comprehensive cancer care involving teams of specialists, participation in clinical trials and personalized treatment programs, and are driving forces in the fight to end cancer as we know it, according to the publication.
“It is gratifying to be recognized nationally for the great work that our oncology teams do to serve our patients here in North Texas,” said Dr. Bruce Meyer, Executive Vice President for Health System Affairs at UT Southwestern, who holds the T.C. Lupton Family Professorship in Patient Care, in Honor of Dr. John Dowling McConnell and Dr. David Andrew Pistenmaa.
At UT Southwestern, more than 200 physicians and scientists from more than 30 different departments, provide over a dozen major cancer care programs that advance the treatment and prevention of cancer through innovative treatments, leading-edge clinical trials and the latest technology, along with training programs to support and develop the next generation of cancer researchers and clinicians.

The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on recognitions received and accreditations earned. Becker’s editorial team examined U.S. News & World Report cancer care rankings, CareChex cancer care rankings, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Blue Distinction Center designation and designations from the National Cancer Institute while compiling this list. UT Southwestern’s Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in North Texas and one of just 47 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation. Simmons Cancer Center also is among only 30 U.S. cancer research centers to be designated by the NCI as a National Clinical Trials Network Lead Academic Participating Site. The Center’s Kidney Cancer Program recently received $11 million highly competitive NCI Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) award, which is the first for kidney cancer research earned by a single institution, and only the second focused on kidney cancer in the nation. For more than 20 years, Simmons Cancer Center researchers have led a multi-institutional SPORE program in lung cancer that is the largest thoracic oncology effort in the U.S.
Simmons Cancer Center researchers’ work also has been recognized by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT), having been awarded a cumulative total of more than $331 million for projects, including nearly $10 million in the most recent awards.
“This is a recognition that cannot be achieved without the full support of the entire institution, most importantly our dedicated staff of cancer care providers as well as our patients, who have placed their trust in us,” said Dr. Michael Choti, Chairman of Surgery, and holder of the Hall and Mary Lucile Shannon Distinguished Chair in Surgery, who is one of the world’s foremost authorities on gastrointestinal cancers.<
