Newswise — PARK RIDGE, ILLINOIS – Charles A. Reese, PhD, CRNA, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) from Richmond, Va., will receive the 42nd Annual Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Accomplishment during the 2016 American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress, September 9-13, 2016, in Washington, D.C.

The Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Accomplishment was established in 1975 to recognize individuals whose foremost dedication to excellence has furthered the art and science of nurse anesthesia. The award was established to honor Agatha Hodgins (1877-1945), founder and first president of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

A well-respected instructor and CRNA, with a vast number of credentials, and the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Reese is probably most well-known for his work in regional anesthesia techniques. His book, Clinical Techniques of Regional Anesthesia, is considered the definitive source, and one that “has guided not thousands, but tens of thousands of students and practitioners over the years,” says former Reese student and Editor-in-Chief of the AANA Journal, Charles Biddle, PhD, CRNA.

Mary Bryant Ford, PhD, CRNA, said in her nomination of Reese, “Chuck has exemplified Agatha Hodgins’ commitment to educational preparation as a means to preserve and ensure the future of nurse anesthetists through exceptional clinical practice…Chuck [has] taught in the regional workshops offered by the AANA since their inception. He has consistently been a strong proponent of making regional anesthesia training accessible to all CRNAs…His willingness to share his knowledge both in person and through texts and articles has shaped the foundation for regional anesthesia practice for CRNAs.”

“As I bring my professional career to a close, it is humbling to be recognized by my peers with the Agatha Hodgins Award,” says Reese. “As a teacher, I was entrusted with an awesome responsibility – to share my experience and to instill competence and confidence while simultaneously providing safe patient care. While this is a personal recognition, I must thank the scores of students and colleagues who politely held still long enough to listen to me and the many patients who allowed us to learn from them.”

The AANA extends its congratulations to Charles Reese, PhD, CRNA, on being the 2016 Agatha Hodgins Award winner for Outstanding Accomplishment.
