Newswise — PARK RIDGE, ILLINOIS –Randolf Harvey, BS, CRNA, receives the 31st Annual Alice Magaw Outstanding Clinical Anesthesia Practitioner Award during the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress, September 9-13, 2016 in Washington, D.C.

The Alice Magaw Outstanding Clinical Anesthesia Practitioner Award was established in 1986 to recognize the accomplishments of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) who are involved in direct patient care. The recipient of the award receives recognition by peers as a person who has made an important contribution to the advancement of nurse anesthesia practice.

“I would like to thank the AANA Board of Directors for conferring upon me this prestigious award honoring my work in advancing the specialty of ophthalmic anesthesia,” said Harvey. “The opportunity to publish, educate and participate in improving the quality and safety of ‘ophthalmic block techniques’ has been very rewarding.”

A founding member of the Ophthalmic Anesthesia Society (OAS), Harvey is passionate about teaching CRNAs, anesthesiologists and ophthalmologists the intricacies of ophthalmic anesthesia, in particular orbital blocks. A highly respected authority in this area, Harvey created and teaches an ophthalmic block workshop, and also has authored a chapter on anesthesia for ophthalmic procedures in the textbook and study guide titled, Nurse Anesthesia.

“Mr. Harvey’s course has evolved over the years to touch upon not only orbital blocks but also accreditation issues, evidenced-based practice issues and regulatory issues that affect ambulatory surgery centers across the country,” says colleague Robert J. Gauvin, MS, CRNA. “Mr. Harvey is a role model and fine example of a CRNA becoming a leading expert in his area of interest.”

Harvey earned his bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy at the Florida Technological University, Orlando, Fla.; his A.S. in nursing from Valencia Community College in Orlando; and his certification in anesthesia from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

The AANA congratulates Randolf Harvey, BS, CRNA, on being named the 2016 Alice Magaw Award winner for Outstanding Clinical Anesthesia Practitioner.
