Newswise — PARK RIDGE, Ill. – Howard Burtnett, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), from York, Pa., has been named the 2016 Clinical Instructor of the Year by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). Burtnett receives the award during the AANA’s Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress held September 9-13, 2016, in Washington, D.C.

The Clinical Instructor of the Year Award was established in 1991 to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the teaching of nurse anesthesia students in the clinical area.

Burtnett is faculty and clinical coordinator for the York College of Pennsylvania/ WellSpan Health Nurse Anesthesia Program in York, Pa.

"I have been blessed to have had insightful mentors, as well as dedicated learners, both of which make this acknowledgement possible,” said Burnett. “The true award lies in the professional growth I have witnessed in these learners and in the knowledge of the success each have enjoyed in their provision of safe, quality and compassionate anesthesia care."

Both civilian and military work experiences have taken Burtnett across the country through several states and he also was deployed as an anesthesia provider to Germany in the mid-1990s. Burtnett has used his clinical prowess in mission work in Bolivia, Zambia and Croatia, but has mainly applied his considerable talents to teaching student registered nurse anesthetists in the U.S. Army and several civilian programs. He has written for several clinical publications and is a recipient of the Order of Military Medical Merit and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

“Current and former students will tell you that when you spend a day with Professor Burtnett in the operating room, you will have one of the most challenging yet rewarding days of your anesthesia training,” said former students Heather Baglio, MSN, CRNA, and Julie Linton, MSN, CRNA. “His teaching and guidance ultimately bridge the gap for us between our textbooks and the clinical world, helping many of us to blend the art and science of anesthesia. It is clear that every clinical judgment made on his part is supported by the scientific underpinnings that we spend hours learning about in the classroom.”

The AANA extends its congratulations to Howard Burtnett, MHS, CRNA on being selected the 2016 Clinical Instructor of the Year.
