Joel Dudley, PhD, Appointed to Launch and Lead the Institute for Next Generation Healthcare at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
Newswise — (New York – September 26, 2016) Joel Dudley, PhD, has been appointed as the first Director of the Institute for Next Generation Healthcare at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), a new venture that will assure Mount Sinai’s position as an internationally recognized hub for research, clinical care, and education in the burgeoning and highly competitive field of digital medicine.
As its name implies, the Institute for Next Generation Healthcare is setting out to build a new model of research, innovation, and market delivery to hasten and help shape the impending revolution in health care. Its vision is to harness cutting-edge science, technology, analytics, and human-centered design to enhance the health and vitality of people everywhere. “Dr. Dudley will help lay a foundation for research and technology development programs that will accelerate the transition to next-generation health care and transform medicine in the coming decades,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System.
As an internationally recognized investigator in the fields of translational bioinformatics and precision medicine, Dr. Dudley is uniquely positioned to define the vision and recruit world-renowned talent to help him lead this new endeavor. Having earned his PhD in biomedical informatics at Stanford University, Dr. Dudley joined the ISMMS faculty in 2012. He is an Associate Professor of Genetics and Genomic Sciences, as well as Director of the Harris Center for Precision Wellness and Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics; he will consolidate those duties into his new Institute role. Dr. Dudley has authored or co-authored more than 85 scientific papers and co-authored the first textbook on personalized genomics. Dr. Dudley is named on patents in clinical genomics, serves as an advisor to start-ups, and has experience launching venture-backed start-up companies. He will use his entrepreneurship and innovation experience to ensure that the institute’s discoveries are translated rapidly into real-world value. Dr. Dudley was included among the 100 Most Creative People of the Year for 2014 by Fast Company Magazine.

Integral to this vision, the new Institute will integrate activities across three different locations. At ISMMS, Mount Sinai’s renowned group of scientists will generate the knowledge and biological discovery that will fuel technological innovation and new models for clinical care. The Institute will also establish a Next Generation Health Clinic in Manhattan, a first-of-its-kind prototyping center for technology and care models as well as a provider of innovative clinical trials and services; and a Health Data and Design Innovation (HD2I) center in California’s Silicon Valley, which will leverage the unique talent and culture of the Bay Area to translate the data science and design innovations into go-to-market delivery systems.
