Mount Sinai’s Leading Cardiologist Chair of an Advisory Committee to the Next Presidential Administration on Global Health
Newswise — NEW YORK, NY (September 30, 2016) - Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Director, Mount Sinai Heart, and Physician-in-Chief of The Mount Sinai Hospital, has been appointed Co-Chair of the newly established Consensus Committee on Global Health and the Future of the United States. The Committee will advise the next presidential administration on the role of the United States in the future of global health.
The Committee was established by the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to assess the current global health landscape and how it has evolved over the last eight years; update the roles of the public and private sectors in global health; recommend how the president and administration, as well as other global health leaders, should prioritize resources; and examine how US global health resources can be used more effectively and responsively. The 15-member committee includes leaders of national and international health organizations and chief executive officers of global companies.
“This new appointment is another example of the exemplary leadership that Valentin Fuster has demonstrated at the Mount Sinai Health System,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System. “His many years as a clinician and a scientist will serve him well in this capacity.”
Dr. Fuster is a past president of both the American Heart Association and the World Heart Federation. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, where he served as Chair of the Committee on Preventing the Global Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease, and was a member of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Council. Dr. Fuster was also President of the Training Program of the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Fuster is an author of about 1,000 research articles on the subjects of coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, and thrombosis, and has published two leading books on clinical cardiology and research: “Hurst’s The Heart” and “Atherothrombosis and Coronary Artery Disease.” He has received honorary doctorate degrees from 33 distinguished universities throughout the world.
“I am honored to lead this prestigious Committee,” said Dr. Fuster, who is also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). “I have spent the last forty years dedicated to the promotion of heart health worldwide. This position will enable me to further contribute to the future of global health.”
