Newswise — A new, special report from The Hastings Center – focusing specifically on nursing – is now available. Penn Nursing’s Connie Ulrich, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor of Nursing and Associate Professor of Bioethics, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, served as editor and contributor for the special edition, Nurses at the Table: Nursing, Ethics, and Health Policy. Through a collaboration with Hastings, Ulrich was awarded various grants in order to produce and develop the supplement that includes a series of essays on nursing, ethics and health policy. This is first time Hastings has produced a special report that focuses solely on nursing.

“This publication strives to give voice to the contributions of nurses in addressing some of the industry’s obstinate everyday ethics and health policy challenges,” says Ulrich. “Nurses are working on the front lines of care every day and often under conditions of uncertainty or conflict that test their knowledge, values, and actions. The ethics essays in this special supplement should open a robust inter-professional dialogue on the value of nursing and nursing's contributions to the policies that inevitably shape the health and welfare of citizens.”

The Hastings Center Report, Nurses at the Table: Nursing, Ethics, and Health Policy, was published with the support of the American Academy of Nursing , with additional support from Penn Nursing’s NewCourtland Center for Transitions and Health, and the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania.

Additional members of the editorial team for this special report include: Christine Grady, PhD, Chief of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, and Commissioner on the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues; Ann Hamric, PhD, RN, FAAN, Emeritus Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University; and Nancy Berlinger, PhD, Research Scholar at The Hastings Center.
