Newswise — PARK RIDGE, ILLINOIS – Joseph Pellegrini, PhD, CRNA, FAAN, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist from Reisterstown, Md., has been elected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). Pellegrini joins the ranks of an elite group of just over 2,000 nursing professionals, and only 30 CRNAs, who have been elected as AAN Fellows since the academy was established in 1973.

Pellegrini is an associate professor and director of the nurse anesthesia program at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, Baltimore, Md., for the past five years.

Pellegrini oversees graduate students as they matriculate through the clinical and didactic science curriculums to become a CRNA. Prior to becoming program director, Pellegrini served as the assistant director of the University of Maryland Nurse Anesthesia Program, and the director of research in the Navy Nurse Corps Anesthesia Program at the Naval School of Health Sciences, where he retired at the rank of Captain.

“The goals of the American Academy of Nursing align with those of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, which are to serve the public and the nursing profession through the advancement of healthcare policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge,” said Pellegrini. “It is indeed an honor to be selected as a fellow into such a prestigious body of nursing professionals.”

The AAN is an organization of distinguished nursing leaders who are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the profession through publications, research, awards and honors, professional activities, and community service. The academy’s Fellows represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 24 countries. The induction will take place during the academy’s 2016 Annual Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., Oct. 20-22.
