Newswise — WASHINGTON - The National Academy of Medicine has elected Andrew William Bazemore, MD, MPH, director, Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care, and assistant professor of family medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, as a lifetime member.

At the Robert Graham Center, Bazemore supports the development of tools that empower primary care providers, leaders, and policymakers. This is exemplified in his efforts to create and grow geospatial tools that foster access, visualization, and effective use data to inform planning and policy.

As the Director of the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care, Bazemore plays an integral role in Georgetown’s Robert L. Phillips Health Policy Fellowship by mentoring fellows, and producing timely, informative research. In addition, Bazemore is a faculty facilitator for the School of Medicine’s Population Health Track. According to the Academy, “new members are elected by current active members through a selective process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health.”

The Academy announced its new members this week. “These newly elected members are outstanding professionals who care deeply about advancing health and health care in the U.S. and globally,” said National Academy of Medicine President Victor J. Dzau. “Their expertise will help our organization address pressing health challenges and improve health, science, and medicine for the benefit of us all. It is my privilege to welcome these accomplished individuals to the National Academy of Medicine.” In addition to serving on faculty at Georgetown, Bazemore is a member of the department of family medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, and has an appointment in the department of health policy at George Washington University School of Public Health. He practices weekly and teaches students and residents at VCU-Fairfax Family Medicine Residency program.

Bazemore earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina and his MPH from Harvard University.
