Newswise — PARK RIDGE, Illinois–Normalynn Garrett, PhD, CRNA, FAAN, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) from San Antonio, Texas, has been inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), joining more than 2,400 nursing leaders who make up the academy. She will be honored with the other 163 inductees at a ceremony to be held during the AAN’s annual policy conference, October 20-22, 2016, in Washington, D.C.

Garrett’s military experience and eagerness for evidence-based practice and rigorous educational standards, her desire to expand access for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to original research and educational excellence, and her dedication to improving healthcare treatment protocols for chemical and biological warfare, make her uniquely positioned to become a fellow of the AAN.

Commenting on her career, Garrett said she strives to “advance the vision of the academy to serve the public and nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through nursing knowledge and science. My enthusiasm for translating research into evidence-based practice will support the academy initiatives to develop and use nursing science to provide a strong voice for nurse scientists at the national and international levels,” she said.

“[Garrett’s] advocacy for a more scientific, research oriented anesthesia nursing journal culminated in the first yearly research-only supplemental publication to the AANA Journal, which provided a needed outlet for research dissemination to more than 45,000 practicing nurse anesthetists,” says Lorraine Jordan, PhD, CRNA, CAE, FAAN, executive director, AANA Foundation.

The AANA congratulations Normalynn Garrett on her induction as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
