Newswise — DENVER(November 13, 2016) – The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists is pleased to announce the 2016 Dale E. Wurster recipient, Stephen R. Byrn, Ph.D., of Purdue University. Byrn is recognized for his work in the field of Solid State Chemistry of Drugs. Supported by the Dale E. Wurster Endowment, this award is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences in the specific field of pharmaceutics.

Byrn and his team use X-ray crystallography and other imaging methods to understand the structure of medicines. Using these methods determines the structure of medicines and relates this to the performance of these medicines in patients.

“Our lab at Purdue University is utilizing the basic tenants of solid state chemistry to understand the pharmaceutics of dosage forms including medicines used for cancer, rare diseases, antiviral drugs, and abuse deterrent formulations. These improved medicines will help improve global health and treat pediatric diseases,” said Byrn.

Dr. Stephen R. Byrn set in motion the development of the field of Solid State Chemistry of Drugs with his books and papers on the subject, the first of which were published in the mid-1970s. He has taught more than 100 short courses and has educated more than 50 Ph. D. students. Dr. Byrn has won numerous grants including one of the first from the NIH Centers for AIDS Research. He is cofounder of Purdue’s regulatory graduate programs and cofounder of the Purdue-Kilimanjaro Sustainable Medicines in Africa Program. He has chaired several FDA and USP committees and is extensively involved in The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education (NIPTE). He is also cofounder of SSCI, Inc. (Solid State Chemical Information), a cGMP.

This award is funded by the endowment for the Dale E. Wurster Research Award. For more information on how to contribute, visit http://www.aaps.org/Endowment/Contribute/.
