Newswise — Did you turn on the lights or take a drink of water today? If so, you accessed the nation's critical infrastructure.

What is critical infrastructure? It’s the interrelated systems that make sure you have what you need to go about your everyday life; things like transportation, communications, electricity, and manufacturing of critical resources. These are systems whose loss or incapacity could have debilitating impact on our national security, our economy, or public safety.

So what happens when these systems are disrupted? A major storm knocks out power. A water line breaks. A tornado knocks out cell towers. How can we protect these systems and help them bounce back faster if they are disrupted? That's what S&T wants to know and is learning about, with the assistance of Critical Infrastructure and Resilience Institute (CIRI), a DHS S&T Center of Excellence (COE) based at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

CIRI conducts research and education to enhance the resiliency of the nation’s critical infrastructures and the businesses and public entities that own and operate those assets and systems. For more information, visit https://ciri.hsuniversityprograms.org/index.cfm/centers-of-excellence/ciri/.

Join us November 29 from 1-2 p.m. ET for a discussion with the S&T and CIRI. Experts from CIRI will be available to answer your questions on a range of critical infrastructure issues. We look forward to your questions! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter today!
