Newswise — SEATTLE – (Dec. 6, 2016) – For the 11th consecutive year, The Leapfrog Group today named Virginia Mason Medical Center a Top Hospital based on its evaluation of quality and safety at medical centers across the nation.

The Top Hospital award is based on results of the 2016 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing qualifications for the award, including infection rates and the hospital’s ability to prevent errors.

Virginia Mason is the only facility in the nation to be designated a Top Hospital every year since the recognition program began in 2006. Also, Virginia Mason is the only recipient of the 2016 Top Hospital award in Washington state.

“The Top Hospital award from The Leapfrog Group is another affirmation of our team members’ focus on quality and safety, and on creating a remarkable patient experience,” said Virginia Mason Chairman and CEO Gary S. Kaplan, MD. “The attributes of teamwork, integrity, excellence and service guide our work every day and ensure we are on the right path.”

Established in 2000 by large employers and other health care purchasers, the Washington, D.C.-based Leapfrog Group is a non-profit coalition driving giant leaps forward in health care quality, safety and transparency. Members of the watchdog group include several Fortune 100 companies.

National and regional health plans use Leapfrog hospital survey results to power decision-support tools for their members and regional coalitions use the data to activate their communities around safety and quality.

“Being acknowledged as a Top Hospital is an incredible feat achieved by less than three percent of hospitals nationwide,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “With this honor, Virginia Mason has established its commitment to safer and higher quality care. Providing this level of care requires motivation and drive from every team member.”
