Newswise — After months of toiling at the Porter Ranch, Calif. gas leak, California State University Channel Islands Biology Lecturer and Cal Tech scientist Patricia Tavormina, Ph.D. has discovered a naturally-occuring molecule that may have eaten some of the deadly methane released during the spill.

The massive Aliso Canyon gas leak caused thousands to leave their homes. Escaping gas from an underground well was discovered by SoCalGas employees on October 23, 2015. This second-largest gas storage facility of its kind in the United States.

Dr. Tavormina just presented her groundbreaking (no pun intended, but what a great pun) research at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco. This has significant implications for all areas that suffer natural gas or oil leaks and spills.
