Newswise — CLEVELAND -- The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit health care ratings organization, today released new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. The Safety Grade assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals nationwide based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, UH Geauga Medical Center, UH St. John Medical Center, UH Samaritan Medical Center, and Southwest General Health Center, a joint-venture hospital, are five of 832 hospitals awarded an “A” for their commitment to keeping patients safe and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S.
“Earning an “A” from Leapfrog is a significant recognition that our hospitals accept with pride,” said William Annable, MD, Chief Quality Officer and Director, UH Quality Institute and
UH Chief Medical Officer. “This achievement is never seen as any one individual’s efforts but rather as a team effort of all caregivers and leaders at these hospitals. It speaks to the dedication to quality and safety that is a core value for all UH employees.”

Developed under the guidance of a Blue Ribbon National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
