"Do you hear Yanny or Laurel?"  That's the question many are asking this week after an audio clip that went viral has people divided.

Dr. Andrew J Fishman, MD, director of Neurotology and Cranial Base Surgery, and the director of the Cochlear Implant Program at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois, is available to discuss why people may hear and interpret the same audio clip differently. 

Dr. Fishman has over 20 years experience in adult and pediatric neurotology and cranial base surgery. While serving as associate professor of otolaryngology and neurological surgery at Northwestern University and academic faculty at New York University Medical Center, Dr. Fishman performed important clinical research and authored numerous publications about acoustic neuromas, cochlear implants, cranial base surgery, facial nerve surgery, and other tumors and diseases of the inner ear, pituitary region. 

In 2014, Dr. Fishman was appointed as the Douglas L. Johnson Inaugural Chair of Neurosciences at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital. He is also on staff at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, Ill. and the Northwestern Medicine Cancer Center in Warrenville, Ill. 

Dr. Fishman's areas of expertise include cochlear implants, Ménière’s disease, acoustic neuroma, other cranial base tumors including pituitary tumors, ear disorders and tumors of the parotid gland and facial nerve. 

Dr. Fishman has served as a civilian consultant to the United States Navy at Walter Reed Military Medical Center where he trained physicians to perform cranial base surgeries as well as facial nerve reconstruction.

Dr. Fishman also holds numerous international and national clinical appointments. He is a visiting professor of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at the NATO Military Hospital and international visiting professor of pediatric otolaryngology at the Children’s Hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland, where he consulted on the development of the first pediatric implant program in the region. Under his mentorship, these centers operate a vibrant cranial base surgery program performing numerous surgeries on the ear, parotid gland, acoustic neuromas, pituitary gland, jugular foramen tumors, neurofibromatosis type 2, meningioma and Bell’s palsy.

Dr. Fishman operates the Douglas L. Johnson cranial base surgery anatomic laboratory where surgical approaches are studied and optimized. He maintains a close collaboration in research and publication with his numerous partnering institutions.
