ITHACA, N.Y. – Akwesasne native Tsiorasa Barreiro, Executive Director of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has been named a recipient of the Cornell New York State Hometown Alumni Award.

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe operates over 80 programs in different areas including education, health services, environment, economic development and human services. All division directors report to Barreiro.

Barreiro graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in communications from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and also minored in Native American studies. Prior to moving back north, Barreiro was vice president of the fifth largest Native American-owned company in the U.S., Ongweoweh Corporation, and previously worked at Cornell’s American Indian Program, directing the Akwe:kon House.

Barreiro is active as a youth sports coach and serves on several boards and committees.

Cornell University’s Division of University Relations — in collaboration with Alumni Affairs and Development and other campus units — launched the Cornell University New York State Hometown Alumni Award to recognize Cornell graduates who returned to their home counties or regions to start or enhance a business or non-profit, and who regularly volunteer and are deeply engaged in their communities.

Barreiro will be recognized at the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 12-1:30 p.m.
