Newswise — New York University’s Remarque Institute will host “The Decline and Fall of Empires: Hapsburg & Ottoman,” a three-day conference marking the centennial of the end of World War I, Nov. 9-11, 60 5th Ave., 8th Floor (between 12th and 13th Sts.).

The conference, whose keynote speakers include NYU Provost Katherine Fleming, Alexander Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization (Nov. 9, 10 a.m.), and R. J. W. Evans, Regius Professor Emeritus at Oxford University (Nov. 9, 2:30 p.m.), will reflect upon the end of the Habsburg and Ottoman empires at the end of the war, with sessions centering on empire’s demise from a comparative perspective a century later.
Presentations include: “Treason and Regime Crisis,” “War and the Jews of the Habsburg Monarchy,” “Habsburg & Ottoman Refugees in the Decade of War,” “Islam in Europe after the Ottomans and the Habsburgs,” “From Privilege to Rights? Women and the End of Empire,” and “Assassination, Amnesty, and the End of the Austrian Death Penalty,” as well as sessions focusing on the impact of these empires’ fall in Hungary, the Balkans, and the Middle East.
