When: Friday, Oct. 10 – Tuesday, Oct. 14

Where: The National WWII Museum, 945 Magazine St., New Orleans, La. 70130

Who: The American Society of Anesthesiologists®’ Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology and the National WWII Museum present wartime artifacts in conjunction with the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2014 annual meeting.

Why: • People interested in how medicine was practiced 70 years ago will find World War II-era equipment, manuals and photos illustrating how anesthesia was used on the battlefield and in the operating room (O.R.) during the five-day exhibit at the National WWII Museum.

• The exhibit will feature a variety of anesthesia devices and equipment used in Europe during the war, including a device used by British parachute troops, U.S. military ether cans and original anesthesia training course manuals. iPads will play 12 different videos about anesthesiology and the war.

• The war had a significant impact on anesthesiology as a specialty. At the beginning of World War II, there were only about 500 physician anesthesiologists in the United States. Recognizing the lack of experienced providers, the military organized wartime training and the number of physician anesthesiologists in the United States jumped to 2,000 by war’s end.

• The limited engagement exhibit coincides with the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2014 annual meeting in New Orleans, the premier event in anesthesiology that brings together more than 15,000 attendees from more than 90 countries to participate in cutting-edge academic and scientific sessions, participate in career development training and network with established physician anesthesiologists.

High-resolution images of the exhibit items are available upon request.
