Newswise — Orlando, FL, Sept. 17, 2014 -- Wildlife Conservation Society President and CEO Cristian Samper highlighted in the keynote speech at the AZA 2014 Annual Conference the vital role zoos and aquariums are playing in conservation.

Samper made these remarks at the conference in Orlando this week before 3,000 attendees.

Samper highlighted the challenges of development across our globe (including a growing population, agriculture, and climate change) and the vital role of zoos and aquariums in the conservation puzzle.

"Zoos and aquariums play a key role in shaping the future of our planet," Samper emphasized.

He noted that zoos and aquariums have a major role in conservation public awareness efforts with more than 180 million visitors a year in North America; and 700 million visitors a year worldwide. He applauded the AZA institutions for their 3,000 conservation field projects in 127 nations and challenged them to do even more.
