Newswise — COLUMBIA, Md. – Ray Herschman and David R. Nelson have been named president and chief operating officer, respectively, of xG Health Solutions™, an independently operated venture that makes Geisinger’s intellectual property and expertise available to other healthcare systems.

“Ray and David are accomplished leaders with proven track records in information management and building new companies,” said Earl P. Steinberg, M.D., M.P.P., chief executive officer of xG Health and executive vice president for innovation and dissemination at Geisinger Health System. “Geisinger has developed and implemented a variety of innovative solutions to today’s healthcare challenges. Herschman is widely known for his leadership experience leveraging information and technology to enable change in healthcare. Most recently, he served as senior vice president of enterprise information management at WellPoint, Indianapolis, Ind., with responsibility for enterprise information management strategies and related data, business intelligence and analytic capabilities road maps.

Prior to joining WellPoint, Herschman served as chief operating officer and senior vice president at WebMD Health Services, Portland, Ore. – a market leader in health and wellness private portal, consumer decision support and behavioral change solutions for employers, carriers and HR outsourcing distributors. Before WebMD, Herschman served as Mercer Consulting’s National Health and Group Benefits Practice Leader. There, he supported large employers, healthcare coalitions, government agencies and national and regional healthcare insurance organizations in the areas of healthcare consumerism, provider performance measurement and transparency and market adoption of new/innovative approaches to improve the quality of care and lower overall costs.

Herschman received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and his master’s degree in healthcare fiscal management and accounting from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis.

Nelson brings a wealth of successful experience in building new companies and operating units within larger companies to xG Health. Most recently, he served as vice president of federal markets at OptumHealth, Eden Prairie, Minn., leading the development of its federal government business unit where he secured multi-million dollar contracts and supported the execution of significant federal grant initiatives.

Prior to joining OptumHealth, Nelson founded and served as chairman, chief executive officer, and president of Calvert Health Partners, LLC – a healthcare provider services organization. Calvert Health Partners, based in Virginia, was acquired shortly after acquiring and integrating four home healthcare service organizations. Prior to forming Calvert Health Partners, Nelson served as president and chief operating officer for Sierra Military Health Services (SMHS), Baltimore, Md. – a managed care contractor for TRICARE, the Department of Defense military health program covering 13 states throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

Nelson received his bachelor’s degree in hospital and health services administration from Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Conn., and his master’s degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.
