As always, we welcome your feedback. Drop us a line: Christopher and Roger.

Marketing, Reputation, and Image Update

Harvard prez in hot water: When Harvard University prez offends women in a public speech, is it a crisis or a marketing problem for all of higher ed? As you contemplate the answer, note the misstep -- huge misstep, tumble or ill timed cliff dive -- for Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers. In public remarks recently, he suggested that perhaps women "may be innately less able to succeed in math and science careers" due to inherent deficiencies, according to the Times. How badly are we hurt in higher ed?

Governor angers private schools: Maryland' governor recommended a financial windfall for the state's public colleges and universities -- but less for privates. Is this a trend that could ripple nationwide, pitting publics against privates? As a media/marketing/PR pro, how to respond to this disparity?

GOP not welcome in some quarters: Catholic University shuns GOP right-winger Newt Gingrich as a speaker, a move that brings into question the free speech issue and higher education's historic role as welcoming views from both ends of the political spectrum. First it was Michael Moore sidestepped by many institutions, now the former House speaker. Is this a troubling trend?
