Historically black colleges and universities sapped by hurricanes: While many institutions have been hurt by the devastation along the Gulf Coast, none perhaps more so than the area's historic African American universities, which now worry their future may be jeopardized. What role should the government play in boosting their fortunes, or should the higher ed marketplace prevail?
Fighting Sioux and other names the NCAA calls taboo: Few would deny the sanctity of Native American traditions, and all should be treasured. But has the NCAA gone too far in its politically correct stance where one school's Native American sports moniker is okay and another is off-limits? Where will it end, and what does the bickering say about colleges, college sports, and our governing body?
What role should the government play in the wake of a devastating natural disaster? Members of Congress have hardly debated the issue, choosing instead to appropriate huge sums of money for rebuilding the Gulf Coast states -- and now colleges and universities. With upwards of 100,000 students displaced from classes in the affected states, has the government done enough? And what should be the government's role be following these kinds of natural disasters?
