StratCommNet is sponsored by Newswise and Simpson Communications

Editor: Christopher Simpson         Publisher: Roger Johnson

Welcome to the October issue of StratCommNet -- our listserve, website, and newsletter -- which focuses on an interactive discussion of current integrated marketing/image/reputation and crisis communications/issues management events in higher education. The tribulations from hurricanes Katrina and Rita have dominated news coverage of late, but there is more going on in the world of higher education. As always, we welcome your feedback. Drop us a line: Christopher Simpson at Simpson Communications at cs@simpson-communications.com and Roger Johnson at Newswise at rjohnson@newswise.com.

Marketing, Reputation, and Image Update

Historically black colleges and universities sapped by hurricanes: While many institutions have been hurt by the devastation along the Gulf Coast, none perhaps more so than the area's historic African American universities, which now worry their future may be jeopardized. What role should the government play in boosting their fortunes, or should the higher ed marketplace prevail?

Fighting Sioux and other names the NCAA calls taboo: Few would deny the sanctity of Native American traditions, and all should be treasured. But has the NCAA gone too far in its politically correct stance where one school's Native American sports moniker is okay and another is off-limits? Where will it end, and what does the bickering say about colleges, college sports, and our governing body?

What role should the government play in the wake of a devastating natural disaster? Members of Congress have hardly debated the issue, choosing instead to appropriate huge sums of money for rebuilding the Gulf Coast states -- and now colleges and universities. With upwards of 100,000 students displaced from classes in the affected states, has the government done enough? And what should be the government's role be following these kinds of natural disasters?

Campus Crises in the News

American University president plunges in popularity: Spending scandals at the top with Benjamin Lardner, AU's president -- including globe-trotting chefs and lavish parties Donald Trump would envy -- make the most hardened supporter wince.

Frostburg State women jocks out of control: In a pastime once relegated to Greek houses, the women's field hockey team hazed players in a near-fatal night of abuse.

Virginia Commonwealth University student's body found: Her disappearance was a puzzle to police before her remains were found in rural Virginia.

Case Western not broke, but the private research vessel is leaking: Case Western Reserve University, one of the elite private research institutions, has come up short financially this year and now must make ends meet.

Sadness permeates college campuses: A recent study shows one in two college students has suffered from some form of depression in the past.
