StratCommNet Newsletter
StratCommNet Newsletter
Edition # 104
September 17, 2003

Welcome to our second issue of StratCommNet newsletter, which, in coordination with our listserve and website, provides a focus for an interactive discussion of current events in crisis communications and integrated marketing in higher education.

Our goal is to regularly update you on media coverage of campus crises and the use of integrated marketing in higher ed -- and then provoke robust discussion: How to plan for and handle a campus crisis? What is the potential impact of a campus crisis? How best to enhance our institutional reputations through good marketing?

And what are we asking of you? To respond. Let's discuss these crises and the need to market well. Send a question or comment to the group via the listserve. When you see media coverage of crises or good/bad marketing, share it with the StratComm group.

Marketing Update

What is the image of our institutions today? Good, bad or otherwise? Often, we send mixed messages that cloud or confuse our key constituents. Good marketing helps cement preferred images and reputations. A recent Washington Post article suggests that some view many of our institutions as greedy sports factories. See the attached review of the importance of "charitable giving" to big time college sports:

Should we run our institutions more like a business? Silly notion? Former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey is president of New School University in New York -- part of a growing trend of academic leaders with -- believe this -- lean academic credentials. See:
Note that the above story was stimulated by a report and news release from the American Council on Education. Tim McDonough, Public Affairs Director there is a member of StratCommNet and can comment on the story behind this story. See:

Journalism programs threatened nationally: Journalism schools nationwide are pinched between high enrollment and slashed funding. Some deans say schools soon will be bankrupt. Will our nation survive? See:

Just when you thought things couldn't get worse in California: No, Arnold the Terminator hasn't been nominated for president of Stanford, but tens of thousands of Californians may be denied college access as that state's budget woes worsen next year. See:

Yale labor dispute boils over: As classes begin, Yale is tossed into chaos as 2,000 technical, clerical, service and maintenance workers go on strike. See:

Penn state prof exposed as murderer: Here is one we bet your crisis plan never envisioned: Local TV news reported that Penn State Prof Paul E. Krueger -- armed with two doctorates -- at age 17 killed three men near Corpus Christi, Tex., and a year later was sentenced to life in prison. See password-protected story:

And there goes the library: UC Berkley's library, one of the nation's best, fails to resolve mounting budget problems. See:

Fresno State joins ranks of sports probation: Academic fraud was only part of the problem at Fresno State, which recently had its current two-year probation doubled. See:
