Welcome to StratCommNet -- our listserve, website, and newsletter -- which focuses on an interactive discussion of current integrated marketing and crisis communications events in higher education.

Marketing, Reputation, and Image Update

Historically black colleges under fire: The colleges and universities created more than a century ago to educate freed slaves are under fire, primarily due to funding challenges. Their problems are compounded by accreditation issues, which further cloud the image of these most important institutions. With insufficient funding and murky images, what is the future of the institutions that play an integral role in our education system?

What have we bought? Colleges and universities nationwide -- the same ones pleading poverty due to public funding cuts -- are racing to build palatial dorms designed by famous architects. Families struggling to meet skyrocketing tuition hikes may well have good reason to question the trading of the three R's for swank digs.

When will they learn? As the state of Georgia continues mired in public education cuts, the head of the state system invests heavily -- in a mansion. Stanford began these problems in the '80s, University of South Carolina followed in the '90s, and most recently a spate of institutions, including Towson University, has seen their president awash in questionable spending. What message are we sending?

Campus Crises in the News

U. Washington in deep doo-doo: First the football coach is fired over alleged gambling, and then the AD departs. Now the NCAA suggests the coach may not be the only one to blame.

When you thought it couldn't get worse at Colorado, it does: A former female kicker on the CU football team now says she was raped by a fellow player four years ago, and then a handful of other women make similar allegations. The coach is insensitive and the president slow to react. What does the future hold for the Boulder-based CU?

Football star's younger brother charged: Virginia Tech quarterback Marcus Vick, brother of Atlanta Falcons star Michael Vick, was charged with misdemeanors involving young girls.

Email crashes at Cornell: An "error in the operating system" sent Cornell's email offline for 12 hours recently, sending the campus into a tailspin.

Commonwealth community colleges facing certain crisis, leader says. The head of the Virginia Community College System paints a gloomy picture for two-year institutions in Virginia.

St. Bonaventure BB placed on probation: Citing a lack of "institutional control", the men's basketball program at St. Bonaventure University continued its downward spiral as the NCAA placed the program on three years probation.

First snow, then fire: More than 140 Clemson University students were displaced after a fire, which followed a rare South Carolina snowfall, destroyed three buildings at an apartment complex near the school.

Grad students strike at U-Penn: Citing a need for better benefits, grad students at the University of Pennsylvania have begun a strike aimed at unionization.

Coach is culprit, Baylor says: An internal investigation at Baylor cites former men's basketball coach Dave Bliss and two members of the university's Board for unethical conduct that includes major NCAA violations.
